Lincoln County Committee Selects Pine Crest Broker; People for Pine Crest Hosting Town Hall Saturday
Published on 01/31/2025 under News
In January of last year, the Lincoln County Board was working with a broker to explore a sale of Pine Crest Nursing Home; while a group known as citizens known as People for Pine Crest were organizing a town hall meeting in their efforts to keep the facility under county control. One year later, a nearly identical path is playing out. The future of Pine Crest has been a topic of the County Board dating back to June of 2022 when an ad-hoc committee was formed to explore the future of the facility amid financial concerns. The county had the framework of a sale in place last summer, but the deal fell apart. County Selects Broker In November, the county board supervisors authorized the Administrative and Legislative Committee to pursue a broker to facilitate the sale once again. At their January meeting, the A&L Committee selected Marcus & Millichap. They'll be quite familiar, it's the same firm the county had been working with prior to expiration of the contract last summer. People for Pine Crest Hosting Town Hall Not everyone is behind the sale, and a group of citizens known as People for Pine Crest have been looking for a solution that would keep the skilled nursing home under county ownership. They've regularly attended county board and committee meetings, while also communicating with county residents. They'll do so again on Saturday morning with a town hall meeting. Coincidentally, it comes nearly a year to the date that they held a town hall meeting last January (28, 2024). They're encouraging public attendance. It gets underway Saturday morning at 10am at the Merrill Expo Center.

Published on 01/31/2025 under News
Many Northwoods communities have take steps to establish affordable housing options amid a regional shortage. Over in Parks, the city is working with developers on a new project that could break ground this year. Park Falls mayor Tara Tervot provided an update earlier this month on the project, which is being called 'The Pines at Park Falls.' The city has been working with Dalmark Development Group and Alpha Corporation to create 60 affordable rental housing units made up of duplexes and fourplexes. The city was able to secure approximately 20 acres of land off of Tower Road for the development. Tervot says in the release that the development will address a significant housing need. She wrote, "Since taking office, I have met with many local industry leaders, nonprofit organizers, and concerned citizens who have all expressed the need for more housing in our area." Last year, the project was selected for a $1.4 million low income housing tax credit from the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority. They hope to break ground in late spring or early summer. Tervot added, "We hope this project will be the first of many new developments to come to Park Falls."

Like many recipients, Denton's nomination came from a patient who experienced her care and compassion first hand. They wrote, "Holli went above and beyond the call of duty and gave me a ride home. Not wanting or allowing me to walk home under the influence of anesthesia after an outpatient procedure. A true angel of mercy!" As a Daisy recipient, Denton received a honoree pin and a Shona Tribe sculpture known as A Healer's Touch. The staff were also treated to cinnamon rolls, another symbol from the Daisy Awards. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation's program to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day.

Alice in Winterland Fishing Tournament Returns Saturday
Published on 01/31/2025 under News
Lake Alice near Tomahawk will be buzzing with activity again this weekend. Tomorrow is the first Saturday of February and that means the return of the always popular Alice in Winterland ice fishing tournament. The annual event is hosted by the Lake Alice Association. Organizers are excited to bring back the fishing after last year's mild winter and poor ice conditions forced them onto shore. That shouldn't be a concern this year. A measurement earlier this week showed the ice was approximately 20 inches thick where most of the fishing take place. They'll be offering cash prizes for the top three fish in each of six species of fish, along with some kids prizes as well. But Alice in Winterland is for more than just anglers, it's grown into a family-friendly, fun day on the lake with other activities. That includes raffles and drawings, and the organizers noted the community has been incredibly generous, contributing thousands of dollars worth of packages large and small. In addition to a cash payout, a few of the big ticket items are a grill, an ice fishing package, and a kayak. They'll have same-day registration with a headquarters under the tent. They'll be set up Horseshoe and Angler's Avenue boat landing.
