Temporary Weather Closure at Boulder Jct. Winter Park ; Re-Opening Tuesday with Ice Skating Loop Ribbon Cutting
Published on 12/30/2024 under News The unseasonable weather over the weekend put a pause on a brand new attraction in Boulder Junction. The warm temperatures and rain led town officials to temporarily close their new ice skating loop known as the Glide. As we told you just last week, the new attraction in Boulder Junction Winter Park was an underutilized cross-country ski trail that they converted to a mile long ice skating loop through the woods. Over the weekend, the melting ice created standing water and hazardous conditions around the park including the parking lot. According to the announcement, they're hoping a cool down in the coming days will allow things to freeze up. It'll also give the town crews time to work on the parking areas. They hope to re-open Winter Park on Tuesday. That includes the Ribbon Cutting and Grand Opening that was originally scheduled over the weekend. It's now scheduled from 2pm to 4pm, and will also feature some hot beverages including coffee and hot chocolate along with some treats like s'mores. Boulder Jct. Town Park Board Chair Laura Bertsch says, " It's worth the wait to celebrate the New Year and visiting the new Glide for ice skating, something worthy of your attendance and patience." The Glide is the latest attraction at Boulder Junction's Winter Park, which also features a sledding hill and a traditional ice skating rink.

Aspirus: Check Labels, Overlaps for OTC Meds
Published on 12/30/2024 under News Winter is cough, cold, and flu season. While you may reach for an over-the-counter medication when you're feeling a bit under-the-weather, health officials recommend going over the instructions and label. There's no shortage of options when it comes to OTC medications. Aspirus Pharmacy Resident Stetson Potrykus notes that each medication will have different active ingredients. He says, "This can lead to taking multiple products with overlapping ingredients, which increases the risk of side effects by raising the overall dose." Many modern OTC medications are actually combination products that are designed to target multiple symptoms. Potrykus says, "The key is to narrow down the symptoms you have and select a medication that addresses those symptoms specifically." While OTC medications are effective for short-term relief, they aren't always the solution. Potrykus recommends contacting a health care provider if symptoms last longer than a week or conditions worsen. You may also want to speak with a professional if you have underlying conditions, take prescriptions or are simply unsure and have questions.

Raptor Education Group Preparing to Release Four Rehabbed Eagles
Published on 12/30/2024 under News It's an exciting day for a Northwoods bird rescue and rehab facility as they'll be releasing several of their most majestic patients. Some of the most rewarding days at Raptor Education Group are when their rehabbed patients are returned to the wild. Coming up a bit later today, the team from REGI will be releasing four bald eagles who have been under their care in recent months. Each bird was transported to the Northwoods facility from locations around the state, and each has its own recovery story. Two suffered illness from exposure to toxins, another was shot, while the fourth was injured by another eagle in a territorial fight. The patients included three juveniles and an adult. The team pampered the birds a bit Sunday including a final meal. On Monday, they head south for a release at Veterans Park in Prairie du Sac. That area is well-known as a natural bald eagle wintering location. Each winter they host observation events like the Ferry Bluff Eagle Council's Eagle Days. REGI has additional information on these birds and provides regular updates on many of their patients via their Facebook page.

Update:Boulder Jct. Skating Trail Temporarily Closed, Ribbon Cutting Postponed
Published on 12/27/2024 under News Update: The Town of Boulder Junction announced the temporary closure of their ice skating trail known as the Glide due to the recent warm weather and conditions of the loop. They are planning to re-open the skating trail on Tuesday with the ribbon cutting ceremony moved to that date as well.____ Ice skating and ski trails are two popular winter activities here in the Northwoods. Up in Boulder Junction, they decided to combine them for a new winter attraction. The Town of Boulder Junction and a team of volunteers have have been busy creating an ice skating trail through a wooded area in Winter Park. Known as 'The Glide,' the ice path is a little less than a mile. It was converted from a cross-country trail that was largely underutilized due to the flat terrain and short distance. But it presented an ideal setting for the skating loop. Dennis Reuss, Boulder Junction Town Chairman says, "It's a unique way to enjoy the beauty of Boulder Junction's winters, and we can't wait to see families and friends come together to make memories here." They utilized a grant from the Boulder Junction Community Foundation and funds from the town room tax to purchase a water tank rig and a Zamboni attachment to lay down the ice and maintain the trail during the season. Coming up on Sunday, they're planning a ribbon cutting ceremony, and they're inviting the public to attend. It gets underway at 2pm, and they're planning a bonfire and some warm refreshments including hot cocoa and coffee. The Glide is the latest attraction at Boulder Junction's Winter Park, which also features a sledding hill and a traditional ice skating rink. It will be open as conditions allow from 10am to 10pm. -Photos provided by Boulder Junction Park Board

Couple Donates $175,000 to Marshfield Clinic Research Institute Cancer Research
Published on 12/27/2024 under News An area couple are doing their part to help with cancer research at the Marshfield Clinic Research Institute. Earlier this month, Dan and Linda Neve met with more than 100 researchers, physicians and scientists at Marshfield Clinic Research Institute and presented a $175,730 check to fund cancer research. That's just the tip of the ice berg. Their story actually started in 2010 when Linda was undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Dan decided to use passion for cars to fight back, and he launched Cruise for a Cause. Traveling the country in his Mustang Shelby GT 500, they attend car shows, auto races and other events. Their biggest event of the year is the annual Fall Ford Fest in the Wisconsin Dells each October. Over the years, they've raised more than a $1.3 million for cancer research. Dan said, "Delivering hope should be in each of your job descriptions, because I truly believe that is what you do. You give others hope with the jobs that you all do."  He added, "You gave Linda and I hope 14 years ago. You gave hope to Linda's two sisters who lost their fights with breast cancer and you give hope to her youngest sister who is undergoing chemo treatments as she begins her journey with breast cancer." Chief Research Officer Dr. Jennifer Meece says, "The fight against cancer is taking place in our backyard and Marshfield Clinic Research Institute is a key component." She added,"The latest treatment options for cancer, research studies and clinical trials are being worked on by our physicians and scientists in Marshfield, Weston, Minocqua, Eau Claire, and other communities." -Photo provided by Marshfield Clinic Research Institute-
