Medford Coop Names New GM/CEO Published on 02/10/2025 under News
Medford Coop runs a number of stores and services here in the Northwoods. They recently underwent a leadership change, though she is already quite familiar.

Erin Peterson will assume the role of General Manager/CEO after serving on an interim basis since last fall. Peterson's history with the Coop dates back further, working in various management and leadership roles over the course of the last 20 years where they said she has been a key asset in store management, staff development and many processes across the retail services.

Peterson said, "Medford Cooperative has a long history with the community, a relationship built on quality, value and customer service." She added, "I am excited to help us get back to our roots, as well as, look forward to the opportunities in which we can grow our community connections and offer our customers the best service possible."

Founded back in 1911, Medford Coop is one of the oldest cooperatives in the state. Patron-owned, they currently operate in agriculture, energy, and retail. That includes the Tomahawk Ace Hardware, along with several gas stations and grocery stores in the area.

New Northwoods Support Group for Parkinson’s
Published on 02/10/2025 under News There are an estimated 15,000 people living with Parkinson's in Wisconsin, and a new group in the Northwoods is hoping to help those individuals and their support network. The Wisconsin Parkinson Association, in partnership with the YMCA of the Northwoods, is launching a new Parkinson's Support Group to provide community, resources, and encouragement for individuals living with the disease, as well as their caregivers and family members. Parkinson's is a progressive neurological disorder with no known cure. The WPA's mission is to offer hope, community support, and resources to those affected. Participants are encouraged to bring questions and concerns to the group, where they can connect with others facing similar challenges. They said, "While we may not have all the answers, we are committed to guiding and supporting each other through this journey." The group will meet on the second Tuesday of every month at 3:00 PM at the YMCA of the Northwoods, with the first meeting scheduled for February 11th in the Dale and Gale Willcox Gathering Room.

Published on 02/10/2025 under News A career opportunity program with the Rhinelander School District has been selected to take part in a discussion with Wisconsin state legislators later this month. Representatives from the Rhinelander Partners in Education-Academy and Pathways programs were invited to attend the workshop in Madison. Among the goals is to showcase how these school-based career programs provide opportunities for students while helping develop the future workforce. They are one of five career-oriented model programs invited to attend along with the Whitehall School District, Elmbrook, the LaCrosse School District, and the Southwest Milwaukee Consortium. The half-day workshop is co-sponsored by several school-related organizations including the Wisconsin Association of School Boards and the Rural Schools Alliance. In addition to highlighting these successful career programs and partnerships, they also hope to cultivate relationships between schools and legislators and also discuss school funding. The event will take place on Thursday February 27.

They recently took a night to celebrate and look back at the past year including one impressive milestone. The Tomahawk Fire Department recently held their annual awards banquet which was described as a night to honor dedication, service, and excellence in the department. As part of the awards, the department recognizes service milestones. This year, that included Mike Loka. He was honored for his commitment to the Tomahawk Fire Department for 50 years. Two others also received service recognition, Ron Morren at 30 years and Taylor Randall for 15 years. Another annual award they present is Firefighter of the Year. This year it was presented to Kevin Kind for for his outstanding commitment and service to the community. The Department says, "Thank you to all our firefighters for your dedication, and to our families and community for your continued support. Here's to another year of serving and protecting the Tomahawk Community!" Photos provided by Tomahawk Fire Department: Ron Morren and Taylor Randall (above) were recognized for service recognition. The Better Business Bureau of Wisconsin typically sees an uptick in consumer complaints about online florists at this time of year, largely due to Valentine's Day. Common complaints include damaged flowers or bouqets that look nothing like the advertisement; add-on costs; or orders that are not delivered at all. Like any online purchase, the Bureau says it's best to do some research. Read reviews and get to know business policies and delivery timelines. Watch for stock images or AI pictures being used in the advertisements rather than actual bouquets made in house. And as always avoid offers that seem too good to be true. The best option may be to simply think local and visit your neighborhood florist recommended by friends, family or neighbors.

Published on 02/10/2025 under News Nicolet College is looking to fill four seats on their nine-member board. That includes three terms that end on their regular cycle this summer, as well as a fourth that is a partial term. Some of the seats have specific criteria as to who can hold the seats. One of the full-time seats, along with the partial term seat, must be filled by an employer within the Nicolet district. Another seat must be filled by an employee residing within the district. The finally seat is a general member. Once the nomination period has closes, the potential candidates will have a public hearing in March. The selected candidates will begin serving July 1. The three full terms will run through 2028; the interim term through 2027. The nomination period is open through February 24. We'll include application information for those interested in serving.

Published on 02/10/2025 under Sports The Tomahawk Hatchet boys' wrestling team came away with an impressive day at the Great Northern Conference Tournament at Lakeland in Minocqua Saturday. The Hatchets won the 2025 Great Northern Conference Tournament title with an impressive 465 points. Tomahawk finished 130 points ahead of second-place Mosinee.  The Hatchets came away with three individual conference champions. They were Hudson Evans at 165 pounds, Blake Younker at 190, and Nathan Norman at 215. Tomahawk also had six conference finalists placing second. They were Tyler Waller, Jack Derleth, Walter Horabik, Zander Zehner, Fletcher Baumann, and Miles McGowan.  The Hatchet boys' wrestling regular season is officially wrapped up. The WIAA Division 2 Regional Meet will take place in Hayward next Saturday. Tune in for the Fehrman Orthodontics Radio Prematch Show at 9:40 and opening duals at 10:00. Alex Koch and Tony Derleth will be in the broadcast booth.

Published on 02/08/2025 under News A Lincoln County man was injured by gunshot Friday. According to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, responders were paged to an area near County X and C in the Town of Schley. Upon arrival they made contact with the injured party. According to the release, he was treated on the scene for a gunshot wound to the shoulder. He was transported to Aspirus Wausau Hospital for further treatment. No further details on the incident are being released at this time. The Sheriff's Office says they have identified all parties involved and there was no further threat to the public. The incident remains under investigation.

Published on 02/08/2025 under Sports Tomahawk's boys' swimmers placed second in their Great Northern Conference Meet at Rhinelander Friday night. The Hatchets finished with 235 points, finishing behind only the host.  Tomahawk had four second-place finishes in the meet. The Hatchet 200 Medley Relay team of Dane Dekiep, Zach Germano, Sam Zastrow, and Bruce Peetz finished second with a time of 1:47.61. Also placing second was the 200 Freestyle Relay squad of Peetz, Germano, Connor Germano, and Jack Amelse with a time of 1:43.78. Zach Germano placed second in the 100 Yard Breaststroke, clocking in at 103.71. The 400 Freestyle Relay team of Zastrow, Dekiep, Peetz, and Amelse finished second with a time of 3:39.49.  This concludes the Hatchet swim season. Tomahawk will have their sectional meet next Saturday in Ashwaubenon.

Published on 02/08/2025 under Sports The Hatchet female wrestlers finished second in the Merrill Central Wisconsin Women's Wrestling League Finale Friday. Tomahawk finished with 249 points, only ten behind first-place Merrill and ten ahead third-place Wausau West.  The Hatchets got three first-place finishes in the meet. Kylie Peissig defeated Wausau We's Aaleeh Le at 107 pounds. Cadence Thompson won at 114 pounds over Wausau West's Lena Volmer. Gracie Long defeated Manawa's Alexis Ferg at heavyweight.  The Hatchet female wrestlers' season is officially wrapped up. Tomahawk begins their regional meet in Wausau West next Friday. Alex Koch and Tony Derleth will be in the broadcast booth with the Fehrman Orthodontics Radio Prematch Show at 4:40 and opening duals at 5:00.

Published on 02/08/2025 under Sports Tomahawk's girls' basketball squad got out to a slow start and never recovered in Rhinelander Friday night, losing 52-32. The Hatchets only mustered nine points in the first half and were behind by as many as 22 in the game. Freya Alberg led the way in scoring with 13 points while Claire Albert had 12.  Albert also broke the school record for steals in a career in Friday night's game. The loss drops Tomahawk to 10-9 on the season and 4-5 in Great Northern Conference play. The Hatchets will try to shake it off and hit the road Monday for a showdown at Marion.
